From Humble Roots to a Global Medical Powerhouse
HopeXchange Malta has established both a major medical center and a vital school in Ghana. This makes a powerful, life-changing impact on the local community.
A lay missionary group called Institute for World Evangelization (ICPE), led by Mario and Anna Cappello, started the creation of the Maltese Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. Originating from the Charismatic Renewal Movement, this group began a mission rooted in care and compassion.
What started small has today evolved into the renowned HopeXchange Medical Centre, a facility boasting over 140 beds, 5 operating theatres, and numerous specialized medical laboratories.
This substantial growth has been made possible primarily through the donations of the Maltese people, alongside vital support from the Overseas Development Aid of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Global Expertise and Focused Care
The Maltese Hospital has attracted powerful international partners, including Yale University in the United States and the Gemelli Hospital in Italy. These collaborations are working to transform HopeXchange into a specialist center focused on treating critical health issues, including paediatric and women’s diseases, breast cancer, eye diseases, AIDS and malaria.
Building for the Future: Maternity Ward and Education
HopeXchange is currently expanding its facilities, building a new ward that will house maternity and antenatal services. This addition aims to provide the highest standard of care for women and their babies during pregnancy and childbirth. This is a service that is unfortunately unavailable to the vast majority of women in Africa.
Beyond healthcare, HopeXchange Malta also oversees the HopeXchange School, which opened in 2012. It stands as the only public school serving the children in the local community, guaranteeing them safe access to essential education.

The Eurosport HopeXchange Malta Race is more than just a run; it is the annual fuel that powers this incredible mission of love and service. Join us to celebrate the memory of Jake Vella and ensure this remarkable legacy of Maltese generosity and solidarity in Africa continues to run strong.
