Movie sequels that surpass the originals

Sequels are right now trending across the movie world with the likes of John Wick Chapter 4, Scream VI and Creed 3 all hitting cinemas.

It is rare that a sequel is better than the original but a few have managed to do that task brilliantly.

Here are some of the best movie sequels of all time…

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

The third movie in JK Rowling’s wizarding universe took a completely different direction and is the most significant movie in the franchise.

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, it opted for a more mature and dark tone unlike the more family friendly approach of the first two.

It did however keep the magical spark with a brand new storyline centered on the hunt for Sirius Black.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The follow-up to Batman Begins in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is widely considered a masterpiece.

Featuring an epic story that sees Batman and the Joker facing off against each other, the movie wastes no time in its 153 minutes.

It grossed over $1 billion at the box office and is regarded by many as the best superhero movie ever made.

Aliens (1986)

James Cameron had the near-impossible task of crafting a movie that followed up the sci-fi horror classic that is Alien.

The movie was an immediate success featuring a well-written story that blended action and monster horror.

Sigourney Weaver also returned as Ellen Ripley, earning her a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Fast Five (2011)

The fifth installment of the Fast and Furious movies saw the franchise take a completely new turn.

It stripped off the street racing elements that the first four movies presented and turned it into an action movie.

It centres around Dom and his crew who plan a heist in Rio De Janeiro.

The stakes in this movie were unprecedented, and the other movies followed the same formula.

Paddington 2 (2017)

Just like the original, Paddington 2 is a delightful and heartwarming movie that people of all ages can sit back and enjoy.

The adorable Paddington Bear returns in an exciting adventure that surprisingly surpasses everything the original did.

The movie even holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Chapter five of George Lucas’ iconic sci-fi universe and the second film in the original trilogy is undoubtedly the most impressive.

It builds on everything the first movie started with and presents new stakes and tasks for our heroes and villains.

The movie is bigger and better and is filled with so many iconic moments.

It is also unpredictable throughout and arguably features the biggest plot twist of all time.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

The concluding chapter of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy was sensational in every way possible.

Clocking in at well over 3 hours, the movie wraps up any loose ends and each character plays a crucial part in the war against Sauron.

It has some of the most memorable and epic battles to date and features groundbreaking visual effects.

It won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, tied with Ben Hur and Titanic for the most awards won.

Top Gun Maverick (2022)

Tom Cruise reprises his role as ace pilot Pete Maverick Mitchell in this sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 blockbuster.

A movie that is an upgrade in every aspect of the original from the story to the characters, to the music and spectacle.

The movie has broken numerous box office records and won an Oscar for Best Sound.

It was ultimately the movie that saved cinemas from closing down.
