Birkirkara go four points clear, first win for Marsaxlokk!
There was more drama and nail-biting action in MatchDay 6 of the 360 Sports Malta Premier as Birkirkara strengthened their grip on top status while Sliema Wanderers needed a last-gasp penalty to avoid suffering their first defeat of the season.
Ħamrun Spartans were back to winning ways with a crushing 6-0 victory over Naxxar Lions while Floriana and Hibernians were also victorious.
Here is a roundup of all the action from SportsDesk.
Sliema Wanderers FC (2 – 2) Melita FC
The Wanderers needed a last-gasp penalty goal from Henrique Murilo to salvage a 2-2 draw against Melita.
It looked as though the Blues were on their way as despite having Myles Beerman sent off they still managed to take the lead through Samuel Da Mata Gomes.
However, Melita kept battling and they managed to turn the result in their favour with two goals inside the first five minutes of the second half from Nick Cutajar and Andre Pena Da Costa.
Here, Sliema laid siege on Melita’s goal and when it looked as though the newly-promoted side would hold on to a famous win, the Wanderers won a penalty at the death which was converted by Murillo and take home a point.
Marsaxlokk FC (2 – 1) Balzan FC
Marsaxlokk secured their first win of the season when they beat Balzan 2-1.
Udo Akpan gave Balzan and early lead but Marsaxlokk, under the charge of new coach Enzo Potenza, turned the result in their favour with goals from Yuri Messias and Alex De Aguiar.
Naxxar Lions FC (0 – 6) Ħamrun Spartans FC
Ħamrun Spartans were in rampant form as they crushed Naxxar Lions 6-0.
Ondong Mba grabbed a brace for the champions with the other goals coming from a Luke Montebello penalty, Joseph Mbong, Raphael Lopes Silva and Shaisen Attard.
Żabbar St. Patrick FC (1 – 2) Hibernians FC
Hibernians battled more than expected to overcome Żabbar St Patrick 2-1 on Saturday.
Vinicius put Żabbar ahead but the Paolites turned the result in their favour with second-half goals from Jurgen Degabriele and Federico Falcone.
Mosta FC (0 – 1) Birkirkara FC
Birkirkara were up against a very stern challenge from Mosta and it had to be an opportunistic striker from Maxuell Maia that earned them a very important 1-0 win.
It was a hard-fought victory from the Stripes who had to contend with a spirited challenge from a Mosta side who were on a high following impressive back-to-back victories over Ħamrun Spartans and Marsaxlokk.
But in the end it was Birkirkara who came out on top as they moved four points clear at the top from Sliema Wanderers and Floriana.
Floriana FC (2 – 1) Gżira United FC
Floriana produced a resilient performance to see off Gżira United 2-1.
Jake Grech gave them an early lead and although Gabriel Mentz pulled them level, the Greens went on to win the match with a spectacular strike from Carlo Zammit Lonardelli.
