Floriana have one hand on this year’s Premier League crown after topping the Opening Round of the 360 Sports Malta Premier.
Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 16 by SportsDesk.
Birkirkara FC (0 – 1) Floriana FC
Darren Abdilla’s side ensured they finished top of the Top 6 after edging past Birkirkara 1-0.
Carlo Zammit Lonardelli grabbed the all-important goal that lifted the Greens on the 35-point mark, three clear of Birkirkara.
Despite the one-goal margin of their victory, Floriana were clearly the better side on the day and fully deserve their title as they were the most consistent side in this first part of the competition.
Sliema Wanderers FC (3 – 1) Mosta FC
Sliema Wanderers ended the Top 6 on a high with a convincing 3-1 victory over Mosta.
Vito Plut fired the Blues ahead after nine minutes but Mosta fought back and drew level through Zachary Brincat on 26 minutes.
But Sliema were not ruffled and Geoffrey Acheampong put them back in front on 57 minutes before Jonata sealed the points four minutes from time.
Hibernians FC (0 – 3) Ħamrun Spartans FC
Ħamrun Spartans produced an eye-catching display as despite missing several first-team players they brushed aside Hibernians 3-0.
The match could have taken a different twist on 13 minutes when the Paolites were awarded a penalty. But Jurgen Degabriele saw his shot from the spot pushed away by goalkeeper Celio.
The Spartans gradually grew in stature and Kean Scicluna headed them in front on 28 minutes.
Ħamrun went on to rubberstamp their authority in the second half as Talison made it 2-0 on 76 minutes before Joseph Mbong scored arguably a contender for goal of the season with a spectacular overhead kick to make it 3-0.
Hibernians finished the match with ten men when Miullen was shown the red card on 82 minutes.
Marsaxlokk FC (2 – 2) Żabbar St. Patrick FC
In the Bottom 6, Żabbar St Patrick completed their mission of avoiding the bottom two places after grinding a 2-2 draw against Marsaxlokk.
It was the Southernerners who took the lead on 45 minutes through Alex De Aguiar.
But Żabbar improved after the break and turned the match in their favour with goals from Brian Gambarte and Strahinja Jovancic.
But Marsaxlokk, despite having Lucas Lopez dismissed, still managed to grab a point at the death through a penalty converted by Yuri Messias.
Balzan FC (1 – 1) Naxxar Lions FC
Naxxar Lions finished at the bottom of the standings after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Balzan.
The Lions took the lead when Neil Pace Cocks put them ahead but Balzan grew as the minutes passed and equalised through Victor Blasco before Oluwatobilola Awosanya grabbed the winner.
Gżira United FC (0 – 2) Melita FC
Melita ended the Bottom 6 on a winning note after defeating Gżira United 2-0.
Matthew Debattista was the mastermind of Melita’s victory when setting up Alan Borg Olivier’s opener and then teed up Andre Pena Da Costa for his team’s second goal.
