360 Sports Malta Premier MatchDay Thirteen Roundup

The battle for supremacy in the 360 Sports Malta Premier continued to heat up last weekend as leaders Birkirkara were back to winning ways and preserve their two-point advantage at the top over nearest rivals Floriana.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 13 by SportsDesk.

Birkirkara FC (2 – 0) Mosta FC

Birkirkara produced the response their fans were looking for after back-to-back defeats when they overcame the challenge of Mosta.

Goals from Shaun Dimech and Andrea Zammit earned the Stripes three important points that kept them in the summit.

Floriana FC (2 – 0) Hibernians FC

Floriana duly responded to Birkirkara’s win when on Saturday they brushed aside Hibernians 2-0.

The Greens secured the points after converting two penalties through Franklin Sasere and Jake Grech to preserve their unbeaten record in this season’s Premier League.

Sliema Wanderers FC (1 – 1) Ħamrun Spartans FC

Sliema Wanderers failed to keep the pace with league pacesetters when they were veld by a fighting Ħamrun Spartans side 1-1.

The Blues found the going tough to break down a very resolute Ħamrun Spartans, who were again shorn by a number of key players due to injury.

The Spartans looked on course to secure a third successive win when Luke Montebello fired them ahead nine minutes from time.

Sliema fought back and managed to draw level courtesy of a Sven Xerri own goal.

Balzan FC (1 – 2) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

In the Bottom 6, Żabbar SP threw the relegation battle wide open when they came from behind to beat Balzan 2-1.

Benjamin Hili gave Balzan a dream start when putting them ahead after 11 minutes.

But gradually, Żabbar grew in their stature after the break and after 57 minutes Brian Gambarte levelled matters.

The Saints took control and went on to win the match when Marcelo Santos slotted the all-important goal.

Gżira United FC (1 – 1) Naxxar Lions FC

Naxxar Lions battle for a vital point when they held Gżira United.

The Maroons were left to rue themselves for the two points dropped as they were clearly the better side in the first hour of play and took the lead courtesy of a Gabriel Mentz penalty.

But that setback suddenly sparked the Lions to life and they were rewarded for their efforts with an Edson Farias thumping drive.

Melita FC (1 – 3) Marsaxlokk FC

Marsaxlokk maintained their winning drive when they brushed aside Melita 3-1.

Lucas Lopez headed the southerners’ ahead before Yuri Messias made it 2-0.

Melita managed to pull one back through Alan Borg Olivier but the southerners went on to seal the points with a third goal netted by Lopez.
