Four teams at the top after more drama in 360 Sports Malta Premier!
The 360 Sports Malta Premier may be heading into its first international break but the top-flight championship continued to provide goals and emotions after MatchDay Three this week.
At present, there are four teams – Sliema Wanderers, Hibernians, Ħamrun Spartans and Birkirkara – who are sharing top spot on seven points, a clear signal of the huge balance that exists between all 12 teams in the top division.
Here is a roundup of all the action from SportsDesk.
Hibernians FC (0 – 0) Sliema Wanderers FC
Sliema Wanderers and Hibernians featured in the much-awaited clash in midweek. The match turned out to be a highly-entertaining affair, with scoring chances at both ends but in the end a goalless stalemate prevailed.
The Paolites will be left to rue their failure of taking all points after missing some glaring scoring opportunities, particularly through Giannis Bastianos who fired over in front of a gaping goal.
But, despite the stalemate against one of the leading title challengers, Hibernians will take a lot of belief that they can challenge for major honours this season.
Ħamrun Spartans FC (2 – 1) Melita FC
Ħamrun Spartans survived an early scare to see off newly-promoted Melita 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium.
Melita stunned the Malta champions after taking advantage of a defensive mix-up and Matthew Debattista fired them ahead.
The Spartans refused to panic and gradually grew in stature with Joseph Mbong pulling them level just before the break before Luke Montebello won and converted a penalty to secure his team’s second win of the season.
Marsaxlokk FC (0 – 2) Birkirkara FC
Birkirkara produced their most impressive display of the season when they brushed aside a struggling Marsaxlokk side 2-0.
Maxuell Maia put the Stripes ahead after converting a penalty before Alessandro Coppola fired home a brilliant second goal from a free-kick to wrap up the points.
Żabbar St. Patrick FC (0 – 3) Floriana FC
Floriana broke little sweat to see off the challenge of Żabbar St Patrick 3-0.
The Greens wrapped up the points with three goals inside the first 24 minutes courtesy of a Vinicius own goal and well-taken strikes from Kyrian Nwoko and new signing Franklin Nwoko.
Gżira United FC (2 – 0) Mosta FC
Gżira United were back to winning ways when they eased past Mosta 2-0.
The Maroons took the lead through their new signing Joseph Minala before Alex Alves grabbed the second after the break.
Balzan FC (2 – 0) Naxxar Lions FC
Balzan survived the first-half dismissal of Jan Busuttil to chalk up their first win of the season at the expense of Naxxar Lions.
The Reds were up and running after netting twice inside the first four minutes through Udoyen Akpan and an own goal by Pedro Vitor.
Naxxar, despite being with a player more after the dismissal of Busuttil on 29 minutes, could not force their way back into the match to suffer their second defeat of the campaign.
