Ħamrun Spartans and Floriana remained at the top of the 360 Sports Malta Premier following hard-fought victories over Balzan and Sliema Wanderers respectively.
Hibernians and Birkirkara continued to follow the pacesetters while Naxxar Lions’ resurgence continued with an emphatic win over rivals Melita.
Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 23 by SportsDesk.
Ħamrun Spartans FC (1 – 0) Balzan FC
Ħamrun Spartans needed a second-half goal from Luke Montebello to see off a resilient Balzan side.
Montebello’s strike enabled the Reds to move on the 14-point mark level with Floriana.
Hibernians FC (2 – 0) Mosta FC
Hibernians were back to winning ways when they beat Mosta 2-0.
Lucas Villela was the Paolites’ hero when he scored a well-taken brace to secure the three points.
Marsaxlokk FC (1 – 0) Gżira United FC
Marsaxlokk secured a last-gasp win over Gżira United with new signing Juan Corbalan grabbing the winner late in the game.
Sliema Wanderers FC (1 – 2) Floriana FC
The Greens needed a last-gasp goal from Gabriel Sotomayor to take the honours in the Old Firm derby against Sliema Wanderers.
Floriana took the lead through Matias Garcia and they looked well in control particularly after the first-half dismissal of Henrique Murillo.
But despite being a man down, the Wanderers levelled the match through Vito Plut early in the second half.
When it looked as though both teams were set to settle for a point, Sotomayor profited from an indecision in the Sliema decision to lob home the winner.
Żabbar St. Patrick FC (0 – 3) Birkirkara FC
Birkirkara fended off the resilient challenge of Żabbar St Patrick as they cruised to a 3-0 win.
Maxuell Maia fired them ahead before the Brazilian striker struck again to double their lead.
Lacunza sealed the points for Birkirkara with a third goal on 71 minutes.
Naxxar Lions FC (5 – 2) Melita FC
Naxxar Lions produced a stirring second-half fightback to beat Melita 5-2.
It was Naxxar who took the lead through Hugo Coelho. However, Melita managed to turn the game around with two quick-fire goals scored by Jesus Yepez.
The match was set for more drama after the break as Naxxar took full control as they scored four times through Edward Bolanos, Coelho, Edson Farias and Maicon to secure their second successive win.
