MatchDay 6 of the Malta Premier Closing Round provided a raft of unexpected results as none of the so-called ‘big guns’ failed to register a victory with Ħamrun Spartans, Birkirkara, Sliema Wanderers and Hibernians all suffering defeats.
Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 22 by SportsDesk.
Melita FC (0 – 1) Ħamrun Spartans FC
Leaders Ħamrun Spartans were a pale shadow of the team that showed so much promise in the Closing Round as they stumbled to a 2-0 defeat to Melita.
Clive Mizzi’s men took the lead early in the first half when Jesus Yepez profited from some poor defending by the Spartans to fire the ball home.
Ħamrun tried to respond but looked short of ideas and Melita went on to land the killer blow early in the second half.
Mayron brought down Camilo Sanchez inside the area and from the resulting penalty Alan Borg Olivier made no mistake.
Balzan FC (0 – 0) Floriana FC
Floriana dominated possession against a resilient Balzan but could not go beyond a goalless draw.
The Greens created several chances but were thwarted time and again by Balzan goalkeeper Danilo Golovic.
Balzan too had their chances and were unlucky not to take the lead when Victor Blasco hit the upright while Udo Akpan was denied by Floriana goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi.
Sliema Wanderers FC (0 – 1) Gżira United FC
Sliema Wanderers slumped to their third defeat in the Closing Round when they lost to neighbouring rivals Gżira United 1-0.
The Blues created the better chances during the match but could not find a breakthrough. Instead, it was the Maroons who struck the winner at the death with Faysal Chouaib netting the winner.
Naxxar Lions FC (2 – 1) Birkirkara FC
Birkirkara threw away an early lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat to Naxxar Lions.
Maxuell Maia looked as though to put Birkirkara on their way.
But the match turned on its head when Tomislav Papazov committed a freak own goal.
The Stripes failed to recover from that setback and Naxxar went on to win the match courtesy of Maicon’s second-half strike.
Hibernians FC (0 – 4) Żabbar St. Patrick FC
Żabbar St Patrick secured the most impressive win of the weekend when they thumped Hibernians 4-0.
Kristian Keqi put the Saints ahead before David Oliveira Souza made it 2-0.
Brian Gambarte added a third goal and with Hibernians down and out Oliveira Souza made it 4-0 to seal the points.
Mosta FC (2 – 1) Marsaxlokk FC
Mosta came from a goal down to stun Marsaxlokk 2-1 last Friday.
Alex Aguiar put Marsaxlokk ahead but Mosta fought back and turned the match in their favour in the final ten minutes of the match with goals from Gabriel Chiemezie and Prince Afriyie.
