St George’s Crowned Women’s Beach Soccer Champions
St George’s have claimed the national women’s beach soccer championship title after a heart-stopping 4-3 victory over Swieqi United in a dramatic final decided by a penalty shootout at Pretty Bay, Birżebbuġa.
The match was a tightly contested tactical battle, with both defences dominating proceedings and limiting clear-cut opportunities for the forwards. After a goalless first half, Swieqi United broke the deadlock when Michela Felice capitalised on a defensive error to slot past St George’s goalkeeper Filothey Fey.
Swieqi looked set to clinch the trophy, but St George’s refused to surrender. In a dramatic late twist, Edera Marmara expertly converted a free kick to level the scores. Extra time failed to produce a winner, leaving the outcome to be decided by penalties.
St George’s held their nerve in the shootout, with Kirsty Paris, Shakira Bugeja, and Cherise Zammit all converting their spot-kicks. Despite misses from Marmara and Jeanelle Falzon, their side prevailed. Swieqi’s Samantha Zarb and Amy Abdilla found the net, but Krista Montfort, Mari Oliveira, and Michela Felice were denied, sealing the victory for St George’s.
At the end of the match, Malta Beach Soccer Association president Mauro Camilleri Darmanin presented the championship trophy to St George’s captain Shakira Bugeja.
