Actors Who Played Politicians in Movies

Colman Domingo is the latest actor to play a politician in Rustin scheduled for release on Netflix.

Rustin focuses on Bayard Rustin, the former civil rights leader and advisor to Martin Luther King.

Here are other actors who played some of the most influential politicians.

Claire Foy

The Crown features many superb portrayals of the Royal family’s prominent figures.

Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton played Queen Elizabeth II in multiple seasons but Claire Foy stood out as the role in the first two seasons.

The first two seasons focus on the Queen’s early life including her marriage to Prince Phillip.

Denzel Washington

The late 80s and early 90s were a significant time for the American actor.

That only got stronger in 1992 where he starred in Malcolm X, one of his signature roles.

Malcolm X was a civil rights activist, a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, who promoted the religion in the black community.

It chronicles Malcolm X’s life from his early days as a gangster, to his political career and tragic death.

Gillian Anderson

Previously it was Meryl Streep who best portrayed the UK’s longest serving and first female Prime Minister.

However, Gillian Anderson fared even better on The Crown’s fourth season.

She didn’t just look extremely similar but also nailed the mannerisms, voice and chops that shaped Thatcherism in the country.

Morgan Freeman

In 2009, the veteran Oscar winning actor starred in Invictus, focusing on events in South Africa prior to and after the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Freeman portrays Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president.

Mandela is one of the most prominent figures in history, and is responsible for dismantling Apartheid.

It was no surprise that Morgan was picked for the role and he delivered again, garnering another Oscar nomination the following year.

Natalie Portman

There have been many previous portrayals of former US President John F Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline.

Many have failed or succeeded slightly but Natalie Portman easily took the top spot playing Jacqueline in 2016’s Jackie.

The movie focuses on her days as first lady at the White House and her life after the assassination of her husband in 1963.

It was a riveting performance from Portman who completely transformed into the role and received another Oscar nomination.

Daniel Day Lewis

It was a match made in heaven when one of the greatest actors in cinematic history, collaborated with Steven Spielberg in Lincoln.

He played Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US president who attempted to eliminate slavery during the climax of his life.

He became completely unrecognizable in the role and won his third Oscar.
