We have always sang out loud our favourite tunes, whether at the radio, club, or other venue.
Sometimes we are unaware of what we are singing and some of the most popular songs actually carry hidden meanings behind their surfaces.
The A Team – Ed Sheeran
The song that put Ed Sheeran on the music scene, The A Team has a very dark hidden meaning behind it.
This is a signature Sheeran song that is very catchy and easy to sing along to.
Those catchy lyrics however indicate a sex worker addicted to crack cocaine, which is classified as a Class A drug.
Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince – Taylor Swift
One of Taylor’s singles from her 2019 album Love, Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is misinterpreted as a love song.
It actually is about someone who is politically mad and sick.
The lyrics hint at many references to the 2018 mid-term US presidential elections.
Watermelon Sugar – Harry Styles
Harry’s pop funky tune released in 2020 is one of his most sexual tunes, both in its lyrical composition and music video.
He also revealed the meaning of the song during his Nashville tour, about female orgasms.
Royals – Lorde
This minimalist electropop song was the breakout for the New Zealand singer and got immediate critical acclaim when released.
The lyrics diss the lifestyle shown in music videos by many musicians, as not everyone can have the lives of these people.
Lorde makes them appear like modern-day royalty but the song is inspired by a photo.
Ted Spiegel’s photo is of George Brett, a baseball player for the Kansas City Royals.
Chandelier – Sia
Arguably Sia’s most recognised anthem, Chandelier’s hidden meaning is melancholic.
It examines her alcoholism as well as the pain that comes from it alongside the feelings of abandonment.
Sia herself wrote the song to rebel against the never-ending urge to keep the party alive.
Smells like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
Nirvana’s most iconic song in their discography, Nevermind’s opening track is an ode to generation X youth culture.
The hidden message of this song stems all the way back to one of Kurt Cobain’s best friends Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of Bikini Hill.
She spray painted “Kurt smells like Teen Spirit” on Cobain’s wall.
He was unaware that Teen Spirit was a deodorant brand until Hanna said Kurt’s girlfriend used that same deodorant.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – The Beatles
Taken from The Beatles’ iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, this song has always been used as a code for LSD.
However, the origins came from John Lennon’s eldest son Julian.
He drew his classmate Lucy, above with diamonds in the sky around her and showed the drawing to his father.
Pumped Up Kicks – Foster The People
The debut single from the American Indie Pop Band, this song is mistaken for about a child enjoying his new shoes.
What is it really about? A school shooting from the perspective of a troubled and isolated youth named Robert.
Firework- Katy Perry
This self-empowering theme is from Katy’s third album Teenage Dream and the real meaning is faithfulness.
Katy said she wanted to be put inside a firework and shot into the sky across the Santa Barbara Ocean when she dies.
