Its important to honour our home planet
People from all around the world come together each year on April 22nd to celebrate Earth Day.
The goal is to advocate for a healthy, sustainable, and habitable future for our people and the planet.
Earth Day represents a historic win and is an opportunity for mass participation in addressing environmental issues in order to protect the world we live in.
History Of Earth Day
Many don’t know that Earth Day has quite a track record of remarkable successes in pushing local and global action to protect the environment!
It all started thanks to Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. After witnessing the anti-war protests, he decided to harness some of that energy to demand political action against environmental abuses and disasters.
Senator Nelson announced a nationwide teach-in about the environment to motivate change through public action.
The first national event to celebrate Earth Day was held in 1970.
In response to this outcry, the government created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase monitoring and enforcement of the Clean Air Act.
It wasn’t long before the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act were passed.
In this day and age, the recycling bin is a staple in every kitchen although this wasn’t always the case.
Recycling got a huge boost in 1990, when Earth Day became global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries.
By 2000, Earth Day had grown once again, with millions of people coming together to call for clean energy and to combat global warming.
Here are some ways to celebrate Earth Day this year:
Make A Bird Feeder
Birds play a critical role in our ecosystems.
Bird feeders are a great way to make sure your feathery neighbours are getting the supplemental nutrition they need.
Show Your Plants Some Love
Celebrate this Earth Day by decorating pots with your friends and family!
Start Composting
The benefits of composting are endless.
Composting helps you reduce your carbon footprint.
It also means that you’ll be able to produce your own healthy nutritious soil from food scraps!
And don’t worry composting is not as complicated as you might think.
Invest In A Reusable Water Bottle
Eliminate plastic pollution from our homes, streets, and ultimately, our oceans!
Plastic reduction is one of the biggest individual challenges, but it has a huge impact!
Transition To Reusable Grocery Bags
Everyone loves a good tote, and it also helps reduce plastic pollution that affects our health, as well as the planet.
Commit To Water Use Reduction
Don’t forget to turn the faucet off when you brush your teeth and between washing dishes.
But don’t be afraid to take that effort to the next level!
Challenge yourself by timing your showers and try not to exceed 5 minutes.
Get Rid Of Junk Mail
Have you ever even considered it?
It has become a reflex to dump it into the recycling bin.
It only takes a few minutes to ask those companies to stop sending you mail.
Reach out and unsubscribe!
It it great for your sanity and for the environment.
Get Familiar With Your Local Farmers’ Market
Show a little love to your farmers and their markets!
Go Vegan?
Just give it a chance.
The consumption of meats and dairy products is contributing to global warming whether you choose to believe it or not.
No need to quit eating all meat and cheese… but if there is a vegan alternative that you like, why not substitute?
Have a vegan taste test this Earth Day, and if you like it, stick with it.
Avoid Reaching For The Car Keys
Fossil fuels are among the usual suspects for environmental damage.
Learn to plan beforehand, consider carpooling or biking or walking.
