Walt Disney Studios have blessed audiences with endless stories told in their movies spanning 90 years.
Walt Disney characters also wear iconic costumes loved by Disney fans.
Even the biggest Disney fans don’t know some intriguing facts behind these costumes.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The yellow, red, and blue colors on the princess’s dress are famous.
The movie’s animators combined elements of 16th and 17th century European history to create and draw the dress.
The waist and skirt’s hourglass shape was similar to 1930s silhouettes.
Pinocchio
For their second animated feature, the studio repeated the same technique as Snow White.
By taking inspiration from live action models, the characters and their costumes were drawn to create realistic movements.
This led to Pinocchio’s creation of his costume, constiting of a hat, gloves, bowtie, suspenders and knickers.
Mary Poppins
Walt Disney never owned the rights to the original novel, despite the movie’s story being wholly based on it.
Tony Walton, the costume and set designer had to be extra aware and careful of not copying the exact same style portrayed in the book.
It was also set in the 1910s instead of the 1930s.
Moana
The animators behind this 2016 mega hit blended Pacific Island and Polynesia cultures as the inspiration behind the many looks of the movie.
Moana’s outfit was designed to capture her adventurous and voyageous character.
The slit in front of her skirt was added to make her move simpler.
Frozen 2
For the sequel to the highly successful musical romantic fantasy adventure, the costume team headed to the Scandinavian region of the world.
They visited Norway, Finland and Iceland to brainstorm ideas for Elsa and Anna’s costumes.
Both outfits combined Nordic fashion, haute couture, and runway fashion into one.
Encanto
Sisters and costume designers Neysa and Lorelay Bove revealed hidden details about each character’s outfit.
They said that nuance was added to each character’s look depending on the gift they bestow.
Luisa and Julieta demonstrate this with their spices and dumbells on their skirts, respectively.
Other characters like Antonio and Dolores have animals and soundwaves on what they wear.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Belle is introduced as one who prioritizes independence and books as her passion.
The other people in her small French village are the opposite and wear uninspiring colours.
Belle’s striking blue dress addresses her as an outsider.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Jacqueline Durran the designer, wanted to dress Gaston as a military.
The outfit’s colour was identical to the original but the garments were more complicated.
The final look was inspired by the military style of the 18th century.
Cruella
During the prequel to 101 Dalmations, Cruella De Vil wears a long dress covered with red petals.
Costume designer Jenny Beavan said that over 5,000 petals were hand sewn by herself and her students.
