Over 3,000 students from all schools take part in nationwide sports competitions.
The Malta School Games have begun! This new event brings sports and competitions to schools. It was launched by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation Clifton Grima. The goal is to improve student well-being by increasing physical activity. It also delivers on a promise from the ‘Malta Flimkien’ electoral manifesto.
A Big Step for School Sports
The Malta School Games support the National Strategy for Education 2024-2030. The focus is on increasing physical activity in schools. A pilot project is already running in five colleges, involving over 500 classes. The goal is to introduce daily physical activity sessions in all schools within two years. This will help students build healthy habits for life.
More Than Just Sports
These games are about more than competition. They promote teamwork, inclusion, and growth. During the launch, Minister Grima, Principal Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana, and Permanent Secretary Matthew Vella presented student representatives with the official Games Torch. This Torch is a symbol of hope, unity, and perseverance. The students then marched to Floriana, where more participants were waiting.
“The Olympic values of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship are at the heart of these games. This event encourages national pride and inspires young athletes to chase their dreams,” said Minister Grima. He also spoke about other projects, such as a fitness monitoring program with Fitback Europe and more support from professional coaches.
