Verdala Sixth Form students launch sustainable well-being mats and take Malta to the international stage.
A group of Sixth Form students from Verdala International School have created a start-up called Matter. Their goal? To promote well-being while celebrating Malta’s cultural heritage—all through a unique wellness product.
The Product: A Wellness Mat with a Purpose
Matter has designed the Guided Breath and Well-Being Mat, a fitness tool that helps users focus on breathing, mindfulness, and movement. But what makes it special? The mat includes breathing patterns like wave, box, and triangle breathing. These methods are proven to help reduce stress and improve focus.
Each mat is made from sustainable materials. It has a natural cork surface and a non-slip TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) base. Not only is it lightweight, but it is also eco-friendly and durable—perfect for anyone looking to improve their well-being.
In addition, each mat comes with a flexible strap for easy storage and stretching. Plus, a booklet is included, guiding users through breathing techniques and simple exercises.
Giving Back to Mental Health
Matter is more than just a business. It’s a mission to make a difference. That’s why 100% of profits go to the Richmond Foundation, a leading mental health organisation in Malta. This means every purchase supports mental health services across the country.
Big Wins & Bigger Opportunities
Their hard work paid off at the JA Malta Marketplace event in Valletta. Competing against 50 other student companies, Matter took home the title of Overall Winners. Their product and purpose impressed key figures, including Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli.
Winning this event means Matter will represent Malta at the International Student Company Festival in Latvia. There, they will compete against top student businesses from across Europe.
A Growing Success Story
Matter has already sold over 100 mats. They also partnered with Fort Fitness, a popular Maltese gym, to create custom-branded mats for its members. This shows the strong community support behind their project.
As they prepare for the international stage, Matter is proving that young entrepreneurs can create products that don’t just sell—but also matter.
