The IEEE Region 8 Robot Championship took place last weekend
The Robot Championship welcomed eight different teams from Africa, The Middle East and Europe.
The IEEE which organised the event is the world’s largest technical professional organisation.
It is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.
Two teams from Malta joined another six teams which came from 5 different countries over the two day championship.
The Robot Championship consisted of a series of four games which saw the robots go head to head in the arena setup at MonteKristo.
The robots has to do a tug of war, push weights, avoid swinging obstacles and push each other out of pre-defined areas.
From the very first game the team from MCAST called Alpha Beetle immediately positioned itself as a clear favourite.
Over the course of the two days they beat all the opponents that they faced off in the ring, some in a very dominating fashion.
They pretty much stayed at the top of the standing for the full duration of the championship.
In the final they faced off with a robot from the UAE called AI Robotics.
Even here they won in a commanding way securing first place.
Their robot, built with aviation grade aluminium also won:
- Best Looking Robot
- Best Design
- Most Effective Add-on
- Best Pushing Power
The other local robot in the championship, Droid Dominion won ‘Best Manoeuvrability’ and placed fourth overall.
An issue in the motor stopped him from participating in the third place showdown and had to forfeit the game.
It is great to see Maltese students not only participate but do so well in international competitions!
We cannot wait to see what Alpha Beetle and the team from MCAST do next!
