Valletta comes alive this September with science, art, and creativity at Malta’s biggest STEAM festival.
Science, art, and community come together in Valletta
Malta’s largest science and arts festival, Science in the City, is back for its 14th edition. This year’s theme, Past Forward, promises something new for everyone.
On Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September, Valletta will become a hub of creativity, discovery, and performance. With 30,000+ visitors, 600 volunteers, 90 organisations, and 80 researchers, the festival brings science to life for all ages.
From Triton Fountain to Sala San Duminku and Duttrina Hall, expect live shows, hands-on experiments, and interactive workshops. Science has never been this fun.
What’s new in 2025? The theme: Past Forward
Earlier this year, festival organisers asked the public to help shape this year’s theme. The result? Past Forward — a reflection on how lessons from history can drive today’s innovation and creativity.
Festival Manager Karen Fiorini explained that the community-driven theme ensures the festival truly represents diverse voices and ideas, while highlighting the importance of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) in shaping the future.
Highlights you can’t miss:
✨ Science Through Time – An epic street festival journey through the origins of life and possible futures, by Esplora and Xjenza Malta.
✨ Using Science to Unravel the Past – Heritage Malta’s 360° footage of shipwrecks hidden beneath the sea.
✨ Sub_Bar – A powerful sensory performance where music is experienced through deep vibrations, making it inclusive for both deaf and hearing audiences.
✨ The Science Wheel – An interactive theatre performance by Sean Briffa, where the audience decides how the story unfolds.
✨ Art & History Meets Today – Events tackling themes like slavery, human trafficking, and social justice through art and research.
And that’s just a taste — with pre-festival events kicking off from August 30th, there’s plenty to explore before the big weekend in September.
Why it matters
Science in the City isn’t just about experiments and performances — it’s about connecting people, sparking curiosity, and showing how science and art can create positive change.
As Festival Coordinator Dr Edward Duca put it:
“Arts don’t just start conversations about science — they give us new ways of seeing the world and inspire innovation in STEAM.”
With support from over 90 partners including the University of Malta, Heritage Malta, Esplora, and even us at Vibe FM, the festival is bigger than ever.
