Every year we are seeing more advancements on AI and it’s quickly making its way into our lives.
AI is taking over, from business, to infrastructure, to catering and now the movie industry being the latest sector.
According to VICE, many actors are being asked to sign documents to replace their voices with AI replicas.
AI technology will allow multiple studios within the industry to use one’s voice in various ways.
This was stated by Fryda Wolff, a voice actress of the video game Apex Legends.
This is mostly done by using a script to record their real voice.
That voice is then created with an AI replica by cloning it.
The longer the voice, the more precise it will end up being.
Anyone can then type in whatever they want and use words from that used voice.
This is also mostly done without any actor being notified or compensated.
Charlie Brooker, the creator of Black Mirror, experienced this when using Chat GPT.
He used an AI voice to write an episode of the show, but was quickly disatsified to what he recieved.
There are also other companies that let people use previously recorded voices which is a concern for data protection.
It is being widely anticipated that AI and acting will collaborate in the long run and it is worrying for all actors around.
Many are feeling that various aspects of the movie industry are going to be threatened very negatively.
SungWon Cho, a YouTuber feels disrespected that an AI voice can be equally identical to a human’s voice.
Many have also criticized the documents signed beforehand, as they feel their rights are limited and the language used is confusing.
Some special guests of last week’s Mediterrane Film Festival in Valletta also shared their concerns.
However not everything is doom and gloom as there are benefits which have come out from this.
AI voice acting can be used as a system to analyze an actor’s performance and provide feedback afterwards.
This will let actors know where they are in and what role is most suitable for them.
It will show how they can improve in the future in terms of body language, line delivery and facial expressions.
This will be most helpful in auditions.
These systems are also available at a relatively low cost.
