Big wins, emotional tributes, and community spirit mark this year’s races.
The annual Eurosport BSJ Fleur-de-Lys Races wrapped up the 2024 sporting calendar in style on Republic Day, attracting top athletes and running enthusiasts to the streets of Birkirkara and Mrieħel. Organized by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club (BSJ), the event carried special significance this year, held in support of YMCA and in memory of young athlete Jake Vella, who passed away earlier this year.
Before the races kicked off, Jake’s father, Josie Vella, shared a heartfelt message with participants, thanking everyone for keeping his son’s memory alive. The emotional tribute set the tone for an incredible day of competition and sportsmanship.
The first race of the day saw Tommy Wallbank claim an early lead, maintaining a steady pace to secure victory. He finished comfortably ahead of second-place Andy Camilleri and third-place Charles Micallef.
In the women’s category, Mona Lisa Camilleri took the spotlight, finishing with a solid 30-second lead over Isaura Camilleri, while Ritianne Zammit rounded out the podium in third place.
10km Race Highlights: Grech and Farley Take Top Honors
The 10km race brought an exciting showdown as Andrew Grech, Matthew Scicluna, and Matthew Xuereb battled it out at the front. Grech clinched first place with a narrow 12-second lead over Scicluna, who edged out Xuereb for second place by just three seconds.
In the women’s category, Jemima Farley delivered a standout performance, finishing fourth overall and dominating her field with an impressive lead. Catherine Chetcuti secured second place, narrowly beating Carmen Hili by a single second.
More Than Just a RaceWinners were presented with trophies and prizes by Brian Cremona, Head of Marketing at Eurosport Malta, and Raymond Grech, President of BSJ Sports Club. To add to the excitement, two lucky athletes walked away with €100 Eurosport vouchers, while Jonathan Balzan and Maria Vella-Galea each won a Garmin Index S2 Smart Scale, courtesy of Medcomms Ltd.
