Today is international cat day where many people celebrate the occasion with their cat.
There are also many countries around the world where cities or regions are dominated by cats.
Here are some of them.
Kuching- Malaysia
Kuching in the Malay language means cat, hence its region’s nickname of the City of Cats.
Cats are everywhere here from being fed by locals at the coffeeshops, to even graffiti art.
Cat statues fill the architecture, and a museum displays cat artifacts from all over history.
Tashirojima- Japan
This small “cat island” known as Manga is located in Ishinomaki, a region in Miyagi, Japan.
Tashirojima only has two villages and felines outnumber the human population of 100 that live there.
The cats are however well fed, a cat shrine is located between the two villages and dogs aren’t allowed.
Aoshima- Japan
The Japanese strongly believe that cats bring good fortune and luck which is why it also has a second cat island.
Aoshima is a quiet fishing village in Ozu where one can only reach it by boat from Shingu Port in Fukuoka.
You will find hundreds of cats of different breeds greeting you at the seaside and they are all friendly to interact with.
One has to respect the residents when visiting, and get everything they need as you won’t find a shop there.
Venice- Italy
This historic area filled with water also has its own cat colony on the lido, Malamocco.
The cats that live there are all residents as they are taken care of by a non-profit organisation.
They are also beloved by both locals and tourists and keep nasty creatures like rats away.
Mykonos- Greece
The Cyclade island on Greece’s southeastern coast is not just a tourist hotspot but also dominated by cats.
The country has its own cat species, the Aegan Cat from the Cyclades.
Most of the 50,000 cats live there are strays, and residents feed and take care of them daily.
There are also many non-profit animal organizations that look after the cats’ health.
Amsterdam- The Netherlands
In the canal district at the Dam, there is a PoezenBoot or Cat Boat in English.
This is a shelter for abandoned or stray cats that float around the city.
Visitors from across the world are always welcome whether you want to play with them or volunteer.
There is also a museum across the town called The Katten Kabinet where you will find cat-themed artwork.
Chefchaouen – Morocco
This old but famous blue picturesque town in Morocco is also a cat cultured city.
Street cats can be found roaming anywhere, whether a restaurant, an alleyway or in a tree.
Florida- USA
In the West Area of Florida, famous writer Ernest Hermingway’s estate is now a museum.
The estate is structured with ancient furniture and 50 furry friends residing.
They get the highest quality veterinary care and are free to roam around much to tourists’ dismay.
