Over the past few days Malta hosted the Waterpolo Champions League Final Four.
Waterpolo fans from all around Europe headed to Malta for the Waterpolo Champions League showdown this week.
The four biggest teams in Europe battled it out for the trophy.
Everybody was asking if Pro Recco from Italy would win the title for the fourth year in a row.
After the first round of matches on Wednesday we knew who would face who in the final two matches.
Having lost their fixtures Olympiacos and Novi Beograd were to face off in the bronze medal match.
The reigning Champions would face the only other team to win the Waterpolo Champions League in the past 4 years!
Everybody was very much thrilled for one more day of Waterpolo at The National Pool Complex.
The teams were not the only thing that was top notch, the organisation of the event by Sport Malta and the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta got very positive comments from all those in attendance.
Olympiacos v Novi Beograd
The stage was set and the game for the bronze medal got underway at 7pm.
Olympiacos from Greece controlled the game throughout and won 9-6 against Novi Beograd from Serbia.
It was now time to focus on the big match of the day – the final.
Pro Recco v Ferncvaros
Frank from The Drive Vibe warmed up the crowd, and made sure fans of both Pro Recco and Ferencvaros made themselves heard.
The atmosphere was electric and from the get go the game was intense.
There were plenty of exclusions all around and when Pro Recco had a player sent off for violent play with four minutes to go we all thought Ferencvaros had it in the bag.
But the Italians did not give up that easily and got so close to equalising in the dying seconds.
The Hungarian team held on and won the match 12-11 winning them the Waterpolo Champions League trophy for the second time in their history.
For all the local waterpolo fans watching such teams in action was definitely a treat!
And if you feel like you missed out keep your eyes peeled because The Waterpolo Champions League is heading again to Malta next year!
