These 5 haunted places in Malta will give you the chills

Malta is known for its gorgeous scenery, but there’s a dark side to our beautiful island too.

From a headless woman roaming around with an għonnella, to a ghostly teenage girl asking for lifts, these places definitely carry a few other-worldly stories.

Check out these 5 spooky places, if you dare…

Verdala Palace (Buskett)

Legend has it that a young woman, the niece of Grand Master De Rohan, was to be married to a suitor she did not want to. She tried to escape through a window, only to fall to her death. Since then she has been seen roaming around Verdala Palace wearing the same blue dress she had passed in, hence the name; the Blue Lady.

Fort St Angelo (Birgu)

The wife (or lover as it is not clear) of Captain di Nava tried to meet with him at a moment which he did not want to, as he was with another woman. She tried to protest but she was taken away by guards. They killed her and threw her body in a cell in the fort’s dungeon. Since then her ghost has haunted the fort. She was seen around Fort St Angelo looking beautiful but very sad giving her the name The Grey lady.

Telgha t’Alla w’Ommu (Naxxar)

Numerous reports have been made of a teenage girl asking for help from passing drivers. Only when someone stops to help… the girl is gone! Those who decide to keep driving have stated that they see a glimpse of her in the mirror sitting in the back seat!

This will make me think twice before using this road in the middle of the night!

Mdina

Many stories about Mdina being active at midnight have been heard. Mdina is also known for having ghost tours for courageous people looking to get a glimpse of the headless woman of Mdina.

As the story goes the young woman had killed a knight who had attacked her. She was immediately sent to death to be beheaded. Since then, the headless woman of Mdina has been roaming the streets at night, wearing a traditional Maltese għonnella.

Villa Sans Souci (Marsaxlokk)

This abanded villa belonged to Prof. Pisani in the 1870s. Pisani lived in Villa Sans Souci up until his death in 1908. The villa was eventually sold to the Royal Air Force in 1940 to serve as a base. After the war, it was abanded and left to decay.

Passers-by have reported hearing strange noises and screams from the villa.

St Luke’s Hospital (Pieta)

Every old hospital with an abandoned ward is creepy. With so many people passing while in hospital you’d imagine it will be haunted one way or another. People who dared to enter the neglected hospital have reported seeing ghostly figures and hearing noises coming from the abandoned wards.

Manoel island

Rumour has it that the Fort is haunted by a Black Knight. He is seen wearing a full armour of the Order of St John. Some say that it’s the ghostly figure of the Grand Master Vilhena, who commissioned the building of the fort.
