Maltese summers are no stranger to the heat and it can be difficult to stay cool.
If the fan or air conditioner just aren’t cutting it try these tips to stay cool and lower your electricity bill!
Use Menthol
Menthol is a naturally occurring chemical found in peppermint oil and research has shown that this chemical can reduce how hot we feel.
Researchers believe that menthol activates specialised receptors in our skin cells and mouths that sense cold temperatures, making us feel cooler.
Peppermint tea, Vicks VapoRub or peppermint cough drops can provide a quick burst of coolness that lasts around 15 minutes.
Avoid Sugary Or Heavy Food
Although ice cream can be a refreshing treat in the summer, its cooling effect only lasts for a short amount of time.
Its sugar content will increase your metabolism raising your internal body temperature.
The same goes for other sugary or heavy foods.
Your best bet is to steer away from these foods or opt for reduced-sugar versions.
Drink Hot Tea
While this may sound counter-intuitive drinking hot tea can help you sweat and thus cool you down.
This works best in dry environments, or if it’s humid, in front of a fan to ensure the sweat can evaporate and have a cooling effect.
Take a Warm Shower Or Bath Before Bed
A warm shower or bath can actually lower your core temperature making you feel cooler and allowing you to sleep more soundly on a hot summer night.
Cool Down Key Points On Your Body
Applying cool water or ice to your wrists, neck, chest, and temples is a fast way to cool down.
These areas have blood vessels close to the skin and by cooling them down you can lower the temperature of the blood flowing around these areas.
