Another TikTok filter has blown up and become everyone’s new obsession.
This one shows off people’s canthal tilts.
What is a canthal tilt?
A canthal tilt refers to the positioning of the inner and outer corners of a person’s eyes.
The filter draws a red line across the corners of the eye to show if that person has a positive or negative tilt.
A negative tilt means the person has downturned eyes while a positive tilt means the person has upturned eyes.
You may also have a neutral tilt if your eyes are angled relatively flat.
Why do people care so much about their canthal tilt?
As the filter started trending it was pushed that positive canthal tilts are good while negative canthal tilts are bad.
Dermatologists and plastic surgeons added to the claims by explaining that a positive canthal tilt, or upturned eyes, is associated with attractiveness and youth.
They then claimed that having a negative canthal tilt, or downturned eyes, is associated with looking fatigued or sad.

This started the obsession with people wanting to analyse their looks using this filter.
The filter then became yet another way for young people to compare themselves to toxic and unrealistic standards of beauty.
Many used the filter believing that their attractiveness could be measured by it.
This caused the trend to become yet another on the long list of damaging social media trends.
Can canthal tilts be a measure of attractiveness?
Of course not!
Beauty standards are not constant and things go in and out of ‘fashion’ faster than most can keep up with.
Having a negative canthal tilt does not make you ugly nor less attractive than someone with a positive canthal tilt.
Many celebrities who are considered attractive by societal beauty standards have downturned eyes.
Two notable celebrities with negative canthal tilts are Anne Hathaway and Henry Cavill.
The overall lesson to take from this trend is that no feature on your face or body can dictate your attractiveness or worth.
