Why Do We Experience Deja Vu?

Have you ever felt like you’ve already done something that is happening for the first time?

That is Deja Vu which according to its original French translation means “already seen.”

Memory is stored in the brain’s temporal lobe which helps recognise familiar experiences.

A familiar sight or sound stops us temporarily and most of these feelings disappear.

Early research showed that Deja Vu helped doctors diagnose epilepsy.

In recent years, it may have indicated a change in memory or perception.

Anyone in their lives will experience Deja Vu but it mostly occurs for people under 30 years of age.

The same applies to those who feel constantly tired, stressed, are rich, remember their dreams and even those who travel frequently.

Some people believe it’s a psychic phenomenon, while others know what the future holds.

A doctor named Karan Raj said on his Tik Tok video that Deja Vu happens due to a brain mess.

The brain glitches as short term memory gets mistakingly stored in long term memory.

A person’s brain tells them that their memories are of the past, therefore making them feel as if they have done the same thing before.

Whilst no one knows when Deja Vu happens, Raj said that Christmas is a time where cases of Deja Vu are common.

This is because holiday traditions are filled with nostalgia.

The mind goes crazy most of the time.

Other experts and psychologists believe that Deja Vu can’t be studied thoroughly due to how short it is.

Some say it isn’t a memory failure, others say the front part of the brain is trying to correct a vague memory.

A senior psychology lecturer at St Andrews University Dr Akira O’Connor said Deja Vu was special.

This is because it’s a squabble between the familiarity’s sensation and the awareness of the familarity’s incorrectness.

It is also nothing wrong with experiencing it as it shows the brain is functioning well, helping you not to forget or disregard any event.

Besides confusion, most Deja Vu’s experiences aren’t serious.

However, it’s recommended to see a doctor if it happens frequently.
