Ħamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers confirmed their place in the YoHealth Malta Premier League Top Six with crucial victories over Floriana and Hibernians respectively.
Meanwhile the final two berths in the Top Six will be decided on Saturday, with Hibernians, Marsaxlokk and Birkirkara battling for the final spot.
Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 10 by SportsDesk.
Floriana FC (1 – 3) Ħamrun Spartans FC
Ħamrun Spartans sealed their place in the Top Six with a commanding 3-1 win over Floriana.
The Spartans’ win takes further significance when one considers that the Malta champions played the final 40 minutes with a player less following the dismissal of Eder.
Ħamrun were quickly up and running with N’Dri Koffi putting them ahead after ten minutes.
Matias Garcia then took centre stage against his former club scoring two fine goals at either side of half-time to put his team in complete control.
Floriana did step up the pressure in the second half but only managed to score one goal, through Mustapha Jah, as they slumped to their second defeat of the season.
Mosta FC (3 – 0) Naxxar Lions FC
Mosta prevailed in the Derby of the North with a 3-0 win over Naxxar Lions.
Prince Chibuzor was the catalyst of Mosta’s win with a brace with the other goal coming from Simon Zibo.
Hibernians FC (2 – 3) Sliema Wanderers FC
Sliema Wanderers had to come from a goal down to see off Hibernians.
The Paolites drew first blood on 18 minutes through Mailson Lima.
But the Wanderers fought back and after Miguel Baggio put them level, Sulehmana Bah came to the fore with a brace to put them 3-1 up.
Hibs could only manage to pull one goal back through Lyon Abela to slip down to seventh place.
The Paolites must beat Marsaxlokk on Saturday to reach the Top Six.
Marsaxlokk FC (1 – 0) Żabbar St. Patrick FC
However, it’s not going to be simple as Marsaxlokk put themselves in a strong position for a Top Six berth with a battling 1-0 win over Żabbar St Patrick.
Portuguese striker Juvhel Tsoumou grabbed the all-important goal midway through the second half to boost the Southerners’ hopes.
Tarxien Rainbows FC (0 – 4) Birkirkara FC
Birkirkara were back to winning ways with a 4-0 rout of Tarxien Rainbows.
New striker Asumah Abubakar was the absolute protagonist after netting four goals to propel the Stripes to a vital win that lifts them to sixth place on 16 points, and must beat Ħamrun Spartans on Saturday to be sure of their Top Six berth.
Valletta FC (1 – 1) Gżira United FC
Valletta needed a late penalty from Yuri Messias to secure a 1-1 draw against Gżira United and preserve their unbeaten record.
Gżira put on a resilient display and had taken the lead through a penalty converted by Gabriel Mentz.
But it was not enough as Valletta fought back to take a point through Messias’ penalty conversion.
