YoHealthMalta Premier MatchDay Thirteen

Floriana moved four points clear at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier Top Six as their nearest rivals suffered damaging defeats.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 13 by SportsDesk.

Floriana FC (2 – 0) Birkirkara FC

Floriana broke little sweat to see off Birkirkara 2-0 to strengthen their grip on top spot in the standings.

Jake Grech fired the Greens ahead when he converted a penalty before Mattia Veselji saw his cross-shot inadvertently deviated into his own net by Birkirkara defender Stefan Marjanovic.

Ħamrun Spartans FC (1 – 3) Marsaxlokk FC

Ħamrun Spartans failed to keep the pace with Floriana as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Marsaxlokk.

Juvhel Tsoumou put the Southerners ahead after 19 minutes and then Joseph Minala hit a thumping drive that flew into the net to hand Maraxlokk a two-goal lead.

N’Dri Koffi handed the Spartans a lifeline when he pulled one back in stoppage time.

But any hope of a comeback were ended by Weder Silva who headed home from close in midway through the second half.

Valletta FC (1 – 2) Sliema Wanderers FC

Sliema Wanderers took sweet revenge on their Jubilee Cup final defeat to Valletta when they defeated the Citizens 2-1.

It looked as though Valletta would be registering a second successive win over the Wanderers in the space of a week when Brandon Paiber fired them in front.

But Sliema managed to level matters on 78 minutes through a fine shot by Fernandinho.

Six minutes from time, both teams ended with ten men when Valletta forward Jefferson and Sliema defender Henrique Murillo were sent off after an off-the-ball incident.

Despite the setback, Sliema went on to clinch the win when Miguel Baggio grabbed the winner that lifted them level on points with second-placed Ħamrun Spartans.

Gżira United FC (3 – 1) Naxxar Lions FC

In the Bottom Six, Gżira United beat Naxxar Lions 3-1 at the Tedesco Stadium.

Naxxar’s defeat prompted coach George Vella to step down from his job on Sunday.

Jork Becerra put Gżira ahead before Fabricio Virgens made it 2-0 on 64 minutes.

Joao Moura threw a lifeline for Naxxar, but the Maroons sealed their win with a third goal in the 90th minute through Santiago Martinez.

Hibernians FC (1 – 0) Tarxien Rainbows FC

Hibernians claimed bragging rights in the Derby of the South when they beat Tarxien Rainbows 1-0.

Cleiton scored the winner in the second half that lifted the Paolites level on points with Gżira at the top of the standings.

Mosta FC (1 – 1) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

Mosta and Żabbar St Patrick fought out a 1-1 draw at the Tedesco Stadium.

Jurgen Pisani gave Żabbar the lead with a spectacular strike but Simon Zibo levelled matters after the break to ensure his team remains six points clear of the relegation zone.
