The Feast Of Santa Marija Explained

The 15th of August is Malta’s biggest feast, Santa Marija.

Also known as the Assumption, Santa Marija is the peak of summer, and a public holiday across the country.

The feast has religious and historical connections at the same time.

Malta was the most bombarded country by the German Axis in the second world war.

However in 1942, the country was saved from starvation by a British convoy named Santa Marija.

Operation Pedastal was underway in August that year to get supplies to the island.

The process was far from easy as large German forces made up of submarines, aircraft and boats destroyed nine out of 14 ships in the convoy.

Between the 13th and 14th August, four ships entered the island but there was no sign of Ohio.

Ohio was a tanker filled with fuel, oil and kerosene, supplies that were crucial for the island to survive.

The tanker was targeted from the start and faced waves of attacks and bombs by the Axis.

If Ohio was destroyed and sunk, Malta had no choice but to surrender.

The population was desperate for the tanker to arrive and prayed to Santa Marija for a miracle to happen.

Their prayers were answered on August 15th where Ohio entered the harbour.

The tanker was sunk when the tons of supplies were received.

There are 7 towns that celebrate the feast: Hal Ghaxaq, Gudja, H’Attard, Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi, and Victoria Gozo.

All seven go all out with their celebrations and thousands soar into these towns, some even visit one after another.

Marches, processions, liturgical events, colourful decorations, the list is endless!

The atmosphere never disappoints each year thanks to band clubs’ music.

It is also common for them to be fully dedicated to the feast, especially during the fireworks display, whether on land or in the air.

There are also never ending food and drink stalls to choose from, whether savoury or sweet.
