360 Sports Malta Premier MatchDay Nine Roundup

Birkirkara maintained their winning momentum in the 360 Sports Malta Premier while Floriana assured themselves of a top-six spot with victory over Balzan last weekend.

Gżira United FC (0 – 1) Birkirkara FC

Leaders Birkirkara had to battle hard to overcome the stern challenge of Gżira United 1-0 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

Agustin Sandona turned out to be Birkirkara’s hero when netting the winner midway through the first half to restore his team’s six-point lead at the top and preserve their unbeaten status in the top-flight.

Hibernians FC (2 – 0) Melita FC

Hibernians remained on course for a top-six spot with a routine 2-0 win over Melita.

Kurt Shaw and Jurgen Degabriele struck the all-important goals that earned Branko Nisevic’s side three important points.

Floriana FC (3 – 0) Balzan FC

Floriana joined Birkirkara in the top six phase when they brushed aside Balzan 3-0 in a one-sided encounter at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.

Franklin Sasere was Floriana’s hero when netting a brace with the other goal coming from Thiaguinho.

Mosta FC (4 – 2) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

Mosta moved up to fifth in the standings with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Żabbar St Patrick.

The Blues twice managed to fight back courtesy of goals from Matheus Cambuci, Prince Afriyie, Souleymane Kone and Clayton Failla to grab a vital win that keeps them in the hunt for a top-six spot.

Sliema Wanderers FC (1 – 0) Ħamrun Spartans FC

Sliema Wanderers boosted their hopes of staying in touch with the Premier League pacesetters after eding past Ħamrun Spartans 1-0.

Henrique Murillo converted a first-half penalty to earn the Blues three important points.

For Ħamrun it was their third successive defeat but of more concern is the fact of seeing three first-team players, Luke Montebello, Chris Ondong and Wendell Barros, limp out injured ahead of their crucial clashes against Marsaxlokk and Gżira United that could decide their fate ahead of the second phase.

Naxxar Lions FC (0 – 0) Marsaxlokk FC

Marsaxlokk could not go beyond a goalless draw against Naxxar Lions, in a match which saw Lions goalkeeper Matthias Debono distinguish himself with a string of fine saves.
