360 Sports Malta Premier MatchDay Thirty Roundup

Marsaxlokk sent a real title statement when they moved to the top of the Closing Round with an impressive victory over Sliema Wanderers. Ħamrun Spartans and Floriana failed to keep the pace with the Southseasiders when they cancelled each other in a goalless draw.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 30 by SportsDesk.

Marsaxlokk FC (2 – 1) Sliema Wanderers FC

In the top match of the weekend, Marsaxlokk fought back from a goal down to see off Sliema Wanderers 2-1.

It looked as though the Wanderers were set to extend their five-match winning run when they took the lead courtesy of an own goal by Leandro Aguirre.

But Marsaxlokk refused to panic and the same Aguirre turned from villain to hero to pull them level.

After the break, Marsaxlokk grew in stature and scored the winner late on to move top of the standings, one point ahead of Sliema Wanderers.

Floriana FC (0 – 0) Ħamrun Spartans FC

Ħamrun Spartans joined the Wanderers in second place on 24 points after they held Floriana to a goalless draw.

The Greens created the better chances in the opening hour but the Spartans managed to hold on to a clean sheet despite having Steve Borg sent off in the final stages of the match.

Birkirkara FC (1 – 0) Mosta FC

Birkirkara were back to winning ways when they overcame the challenge of Mosta 1-0.

Maxuell Maia scored the all-important goal for Birkirkara just before the half-time whistle to lift his team in fifth place on 22 points.

Naxxar Lions FC (2 – 0) Melita FC

In the Bottom Six, Naxxar Lions moved out of the relegation zone when they saw off Melita 2-0.

The Lions’ cause was aided by the dismissal of goalkeeper Alexander Lubik after 22 minutes after he handled the ball outside the box.

Naxxar took the lead on 42 minutes through Hugo Coelhom before Takuma Yamaguchi added a second just before the break.

Żabbar St. Patrick FC (2 – 2) Balzan FC

The win lifted Naxxar on 16 points, one clear of second-from-bottom Balzan who held Żabbar St Patrick to a 2-2 draw.

Stefan Ilic gave Żabbar and early lead but Balzan levelled matters through Floro.

Diogo Tavares restored Żabbar’s lead but Balzan kept fighting and salvaged a point courtesy of a Jake Grech last-gasp goal.

Hibernians FC (1 – 2) Gżira United FC

Gżira United stunned Hibernians 2-1 to move within touching distance of Premier League safety.

Jurgen Degabriele put them ahead after 12 minutes but the Maroons fought back and late goals from Luis Riascos and Gabriel Mentz handed them a crucial win.
