Designing the People’s Parks
What is “Shape Your Space”?
Ever looked at an empty spot and thought, “I wish there was a dog park or quiet garden here”? Well, now’s your chance! Shape Your Space is a massive community project that puts the idea in your hands. This public initiative is a massive community brainstorm designed to ensure that three major sites; White Rocks, Manoel Island, and Fort Campbell are built for the people who will actually use them.
The Goal is for the government to stop guessing what people want and hear it from the people themselves. Whether it’s a spot for a Sunday picnic, a new sports hub, or a protected slice of nature, they’re handing these lands back to the community.
Putting the Community in Charge
Launched in late 2025, the campaign turned the traditional planning model on its head. Instead of private developers making all the calls, the government invited everyone from local residents to school children, to pitch their dream visions for these landmarks.
Whether it’s a request for better accessibility, high-tech sports facilities, or quiet zones for nature preservation, the goal is to “give these spaces back” to the public.
The Campaign’s Mission:
-
Crowdsourcing a Vision: By gathering ideas directly from the community, the project ensures the final designs reflect real-life needs.
-
Inclusive by Design: The feedback helps planners prioritize features that work for everyone, including families, athletes, and nature lovers.
-
From Private to Public: It marks a major shift in strategy, moving away from private economic development and toward creating shared national assets that belong to everyone.
