YoHealthMalta Premier MatchDay Twenty

Floriana and Gżira United preserved their top-placing in the Malta Premier while Hibernians soared to third place after netting their third successive win.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 20 by SportsDesk.

Valletta FC (0 – 0) Floriana FC

In the top fixture of the midweek programme, Floriana and Valletta cancelled each other in a goalless draw.

The match turned out to be a drab encounter with both teams showing signs of nervousness as they clearly preferred not to lose rather than take risks to bag the three points.

Valletta were the side with the best chances to secure victory, with Yuri Messias found in space by the excellent Jake Azzopardi, but Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Cioletti saved the Brazilian’s shot.

Gżira United FC (0 – 0) Ħamrun Spartans FC

Gżira United held Ħamrun Spartans to a goalless draw at the Tedesco Stadium.

The Maroons could have taken the lead through Maxuell Maia but his effort was cleared off the line by Emerson Marcelina.

From then on, the Spartans dominated the match and had a few chances to win it, with Jonny missing the best chance at the start of the second half when he was denied by the onrushing Gżira United goalkeeper.

Hibernians FC (2 – 1) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

Hibernians moved up to third in the standings after seeing off Żabbar St. Patrick 2-1.

Cleiton put the Paolites ahead after 27 minutes before Mailson Lima doubled their lead from a penalty.

Żabbar pulled a goal back through Pedro Cejas, but the Paolites held on for the win.

Birkirkara FC (3 – 0) Tarxien Rainbows FC

Paul Zammit started his spell as Birkirkara coach in some style after thrashing Tarxien Rainbows 3-0.

Kemar Reid put them ahead early on before Brazilian defender Ronivan made it 2-0.

Jacques Bayo put the game beyond Tarxien’s reach before the Stripes wrapped up the win with late goals from Aleandro Garzia and Shaun Dimech.

Marsaxlokk FC (1 – 1) Sliema Wanderers FC

Marsaxlokk and Sliema Wanderers took a point each following a 1-1 draw.

Redon Mihana put the southerners ahead but Sliema managed to take a point with a second-half strike from Thiago Espindola.

Naxxar Lions FC (5 – 0) Mosta FC

Naxxar Lions secured an emphatic 5-0 win over neighbouring rivals Mosta.

Vitinho put Naxxar Lions ahead before Vinicium made it 2-0 soon after.

Joao Moura added a third goal just before half-time.

Mosta’s response never arrived and Naxxar wrapped up a crushing win with two late goals through Gabriel Costa and Louis Pahama.
