YoHealthMalta Premier MatchDay Twenty-Four

Premier League pacesetters Floriana and Ħamrun Spartans moved clear of their nearest rivals with significant victories last weekend.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 24 by SportsDesk.

Floriana FC (4 – 1) Hibernians FC

Floriana put down a title marker with a commanding 4-1 victory over Hibernians at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.

Federico Varela was Floriana’s hero as the attacking midfielder scored a well-taken brace to propel the Greens to an impressive victory.

Alen Kurtalic scored a spectacular opener with a fine overhead kick, while Carlo Zammit Lonardelli scored a late fourth goal, his first since recovering from a long-term injury.

For Hibernians, Cain Attard had temporarily pulled his team level late in the first half.

Ħamrun Spartans FC (2 – 0) Marsaxlokk FC

Ħamrun Spartans needed two second-half goals to see off Marsaxlokk at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Blessing Ekele scored his first goal for the Malta champions since his January move to give them the lead before the in-form Joseph Mbong sealed the points ten minutes from time.

Gżira United FC (1 – 0) Mosta FC

Gżira United boosted their hopes of a Top 6 finish when they needed a last-gasp goal to see off Mosta.

Andre Pena Da Costa scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the match.

Valletta FC (0 – 1) Sliema Wanderers FC

Sliema Wanderers bagged a crucial victory over Valletta to bolster their own hopes of a Top 6 finish.

Mohammed Awad netted the all-important goal on 54 minutes to leave the Citizens’ hopes of a Top 6 finish in jeopardy.

Tarxien Rainbows FC (1 – 2) Naxxar Lions FC

Naxxar Lions moved up to fourth in the standings after overcoming Tarxien Rainbows 2-1.

Brazilian forward Vitinho was the Lions’ hero with two quick-fire goals early in the second half, with Tarxien only managing to pull a goal back late on through Kwasi Donsu.

Birkirkara FC (0 – 3) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

Birkirkara’s Top 6 hopes suffered a simmering blow when they crashed to a 3-0 defeat by Żabbar St Patrick.

Pedro Cejas netted a well-taken brace for Żabbar with the other goal coming from Brian Gambarte.
