A new Maltese theatre production, L-Eredi tas-Silenzji (The Silence We Inherit), is set to take the stage at Sala San Duminku in Valletta on 6 and 7 November 2026.
Created and directed by Rowena Zammit and produced by Zammit and Busli Collective, the multidisciplinary performance combines contemporary dance, physical theatre, original writing and music to explore emotional suppression, mental health, identity and the expectations passed down through generations.
The production follows four characters, known as il-frammenti, each navigating different personal struggles beneath an appearance of normality. Guiding their stories is il-Kustodju, a mysterious narrator who connects their experiences through movement, words and silence.
Inspired by the contrast between how people present themselves publicly and what they experience privately, Zammit developed the production to encourage conversations about vulnerability, mental health stigma and the importance of understanding others.
The creative team includes writers Clare Azzopardi and Leanne Ellul, choreographer Johane Casabene, composer Albert Garzia and lighting designer Massimo Magri, alongside a cast of Maltese performers.
The project also features mental-health consultancy from Richmond Foundation and research collaboration with Professor JosAnn Cutajar and Dr Zoi Arvanitidou from the University of Malta. It is supported by Science in the City, Farsons Foundation, Arts Council Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority.
Performances will take place on:
-
Friday, 6 November: 9:15 PM
-
Saturday, 7 November: 8:30 PM
Both performances will be held at Sala San Duminku, Valletta, followed by a discussion with the director, a Richmond Foundation representative and the University of Malta researchers.
L-Eredi tas-Silenzji invites audiences to look beyond appearances and reflect on the emotions, expectations and unspoken stories that shape our lives.
