The Gozo Weekender Returns Again This Year!

The Malta Premier League and the KML are officially gearing up for the 2026 Gozo Weekender.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural project, organizers are doubling down on their commitment to fostering football culture and community spirit across the islands. This is a cornerstone event in their Opening Season of operations.

A Two Weekend Showcase

One of the primary innovations for this year is the expansion of the event. Rather than a single weekend, the action will be spread across two distinct weekends in April, providing more opportunities for fans to witness elite competition in Gozo.

  • Weekend 1 (April 11–12): The Gozo Stadium will host three “Top 6” matches from Match Week 28; two on Saturday and one on Sunday. Meanwhile, the “Bottom 6” fixtures will take place in Malta.

  • Midweek Action: Match Week 29 fixtures will be held in Malta during the midweek between the two weekends.

  • Weekend 2 (April 18–19): The focus shifts as the “Bottom 6” matches from Match Week 30 move to the Gozo Stadium (two on Saturday, one on Sunday), while the “Top 6” matches for that round are played in Malta.

The specific fixtures for these weekends will be confirmed during the official draws for the Closing Round on Monday, March 16.

Beyond the Pitch: Community and Economy

The YoHealth Malta Premier is placing a heavy emphasis on grassroots development this year. As a new initiative, all MPL clubs are invited to bring youth teams to participate in a friendly tournament alongside Gozitan clubs of the same age groups. This effort aims to bridge the gap between clubs and strengthen the footballing community.

The event also serves as a significant driver for domestic tourism. A study done by MPL revealed that last year’s event generated over 2,300 bed nights in Gozo. CEO Alan Abela noted that the 2026 iteration is estimated to generate approximately €600,000 for the local economy.

Technological Advancement and Rising Attendance

The Football Video Support (FVS) will be used in Gozo for the first time. This system will be active for the Match Week 28 “Top 6” encounters following the international break.

This push for modernization coincides with a broader upward trend for the league. Reflecting on the growth of the sport, Alan Abela highlighted that the Opening Round alone saw an increase of 23,000 spectators compared to the same period last season.

“This initiative allows us to cross over to Gozo once again and give the Gozitan public the opportunity to watch Malta’s top division matches up close,” Abela stated.

The MPL extended its gratitude to the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, Visit Gozo, Dr. Samuel Azzopardi, and the GFA for their essential collaboration in bringing this vision to life, further cementing the league’s commitment to raising the profile of football across the nation.
