Albert and Dorian will retrace a WW2 escape route across the sea by kayaking to raise funds for Inspire Malta – and you can help make it count.
Two local legends. One wild sea. And a mission that’s bigger than both. This July, kayaking enthusiasts Albert Gambina (64) and Dorian Vassallo (66) will take on an epic 128 km open-sea paddle, starting in Gela, Sicily, and finishing at Golden Sands, Għajn Tuffieħa – all to support Inspire Malta, the organisation that helps people with disabilities and their families all across Malta and Gozo.
But this isn’t just a charity challenge. It’s also a tribute to courage and history.
Inspired by a Real WW2 Escape
In 1943, during World War II, British commandos Lieutenant Philip Smith and Lieutenant David Brand landed in Gela on a secret beach recon mission. Their submarine never returned to pick them up. Faced with danger and no backup, they grabbed a canoe and paddled over 120 km through open sea until they reached Malta.
Their unbelievable effort earned them the Distinguished Service Cross — and inspired Albert and Dorian to follow the same path over 80 years later.
This time, the goal is peace, not war — but the purpose is just as strong. The duo will paddle for 24 hours straight, hold a wreath-laying ceremony at sea, and reflect on both the historical mission and their own goal: raising funds and awareness for Inspire Malta.
Why This Paddle Matters
Albert and Dorian, known as Kayak for Charity, have been paddling together since the early 2000s. They’ve already circled Malta nearly 20 times, but this paddle is different. This one is about legacy, remembrance, and community.
By supporting their journey, you’re helping Inspire Malta continue its mission to empower people with disabilities and transform lives.
