After fifteen years at the forefront of Maltese futsal administration, Futsal Malta Association President Mark Borg has announced that he will not be seeking re-election at the end of the current season, bringing to a close one of the most influential leadership periods in the history of the sport in Malta.
A founding member of the Futsal Malta Association (FMA) since its establishment in 2011, Borg has served four consecutive terms as president, overseeing a remarkable transformation that elevated futsal from a niche discipline into one of the country’s fastest-growing indoor sports. Under his guidance, the association embraced professionalism, strategic growth, and long-term sustainability, laying strong foundations for future generations.

When Borg first took office, futsal in Malta was still in its infancy, operating with limited resources and modest visibility. Over the years, however, the sport experienced a dramatic rise both locally and internationally. One of the most notable achievements during his tenure came on the European stage, where Maltese clubs steadily climbed the UEFA futsal rankings. From occupying positions near the bottom of continental rankings in the early years, Malta’s futsal representatives eventually reached the prestigious Elite Round while positioning themselves among the top twelve nations in European club futsal.
This sporting progress was not accidental. Borg consistently pushed for higher standards across all levels of competition, investing heavily in development structures, match organization, and the professional image of the game. Clubs were encouraged to become more competitive and organized, while players and coaches were given stronger platforms to improve their level.
Equally significant was the commercial growth achieved throughout his presidency. Borg managed to attract major local sponsors, most notably Enemed, whose backing helped transform the financial reality of the league. These sponsorship agreements allowed the FMA to eliminate registration fees for participating clubs entirely — a landmark decision that reduced barriers for teams and ensured wider accessibility within the sport.

His administration also placed considerable importance on branding and recognition. The launch of the Enemed Futsal Awards Gala Night introduced a professional annual event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of players, coaches, referees, and clubs. The gala quickly became one of the flagship occasions within the local sporting calendar, helping increase visibility and prestige around the futsal community.
Inclusivity was another major focus throughout Borg’s leadership. During his presidency, the FMA successfully launched the National Women’s Futsal League, creating new opportunities for female athletes to participate competitively in the sport. The initiative represented a major milestone for women’s futsal in Malta and formed part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding participation across different sectors of society.

Beyond competitions and events, Borg worked extensively on strengthening the internal structures of the association itself. Together with the committees that served alongside him over recent years, the FMA invested in improving operational efficiency, venue management, marketing strategies, media exposure, and overall organizational professionalism. These improvements enabled the association to operate on a much stronger footing and positioned futsal as a respected sporting product within the Maltese sporting landscape.
Perhaps one of the most important long-term achievements linked to Borg’s presidency was the persistent push for dedicated futsal infrastructure. For years, he advocated for the creation of specialised facilities capable of supporting the sport’s growing demands. Through continued discussions with stakeholders, political authorities, and the Malta Football Association, those efforts eventually resulted in the recent announcement of a dedicated futsal arena project — a historic development widely regarded as a turning point for the future of the sport in Malta.
Alongside his role within the FMA, Borg also contributed extensively at a national football administration level, serving on the MFA Futsal & Beach Soccer Committee as well as on the MFA Executive Board, where he helped strengthen futsal’s voice within the broader football structure.
Speaking ahead of the conclusion of his final term, Borg explained that he believes the time is right for renewal within the association, expressing confidence that new leadership can continue building upon the foundations established over the past decade and a half.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the committee members, volunteers, clubs, sponsors, and administrators who worked alongside him throughout the years, while also thanking the Malta Football Association for its collaboration and continued support.

Although his presidency may be approaching its conclusion, Borg leaves behind a legacy that fundamentally reshaped the direction of futsal in Malta.
From increased professionalism and international recognition to financial sustainability and future infrastructure, his impact on the game will remain deeply embedded within Maltese futsal for years to come.
