QLZH Clean-Up Removes 2.7 Tonnes from Birgu Seabed

More than 80 volunteers came together at Ix-Xatt tal-Birgu on Saturday, 12 September, for the 10th edition of the QLZH Foundation Ocean Bed Clean-Up.

The team included 25 divers, alongside snorkellers, on-land volunteers, kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders. Working together, they removed an impressive 2.7 metric tonnes of waste from the seabed and surrounding coastline.

The morning began with a guided breathing and stretching session to prepare participants before they entered the water. Kayak and paddleboard teams then helped transport the collected rubbish from the sea to the shore throughout the clean-up.

Birgu Mayor John Boxall attended the event to show his support for the environmental initiative. QLZH Foundation CEO Steve Mercieca also played an active role in the clean-up, continuing his longstanding commitment to marine conservation.

The event’s success was made possible through the collective efforts of its volunteers, organisers, partners and supporters.

After ten successful editions, the initiative continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when organisations, volunteers and local communities work together. The QLZH Foundation Ocean Bed Clean-Up remains an important annual effort to protect Malta’s coastline and create cleaner seas for future generations.
