YoHealthMalta Premier MatchDay Twenty-Nine

Floriana were the biggest winners in this weekend’s matches from the YoHealth Malta Premier League after sealing top spot with a 2-0 win over neighbouring rivals Valletta.

Ħamrun Spartans and Marsaxlokk continued their duel for second spot when securing victories, while the relegation battle remained tight after all three matches played ended in a draw.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Matchday 29 by SportsDesk.

Floriana FC (2 – 0) Valletta FC

Floriana rubberstamped their authority in the Top 6 when netting two late goals and overcoming Valletta.

It looked as though this derby was set to finish in a stalemate, but Floriana had other plans as goals from Charles M’Mombwa and Kenan Dervisagic earned them their first win of the season over their fiercest rivals.

Marsaxlokk FC (2 – 1) Gżira United FC

Marsaxlokk kept up the pressure when they overcame Gżira United 2-1.

Dodo Soares was the protagonist for the Southerners when netting both goals after the break.

Gżira United had temporarily levelled matters through their prolific forward Maxuell Maia.

Ħamrun Spartans FC (3 – 0) Naxxar Lions FC

Ħamrun Spartans ended a depressing run of three successive defeats when they brushed aside Naxxar Lions 3-0.

Damir Ceter put the Spartans ahead, before an own goal by Gustavo Campos made it 2-0.

Joseph Mbong wrapped up the points with a third goal from the penalty spot.

Tarxien Rainbows FC (3 – 3) Żabbar St. Patrick FC

In the Bottom 6, Żabbar St Patrick and Tarxien Rainbows played out a six-goal thriller in a 3-3 draw.

Mario Fontanella grabbed a brace for Żabbar with the other goal coming from Zean Leonardi.

For Tarxien, Marko Musulin was again on the mark before second-half goals from Patrick Schmidt and Nhayson earned them a point.

Mosta FC (2 – 2) Sliema Wanderers FC

Mosta threw away a two-goal lead against Sliema Wanderers as they had to settle with a 2-2 draw.

Giancarlo Goncalves and Prince Emmanuel put Mosta two goals ahead but the Wanderers saved a point with late goals from Luke Montebello and Vito Plut.

Hibernians FC (0 – 0) Birkirkara FC

The other fixtures saw Hibernians and Birkirkara take a point each in a goalless draw.
