Malta’s beloved celebration of traditional folk music is set to return this May, as Festgħana takes over Floriana and Żejtun for four days of music, storytelling, workshops and cultural experiences.
Taking place between 21 and 24 May 2026, the festival, organised by Festivals Malta, will once again place għana, Malta’s traditional folk song, at the centre of a vibrant programme dedicated to celebrating one of the island’s most treasured living traditions.

More than simply a music festival, Festgħana serves as a celebration of Maltese identity, community and heritage. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage, għana remains a deeply rooted form of folk expression that combines music, storytelling and improvisation.
This year’s edition will unfold across two locations strongly connected to the tradition: Argotti Gardens in Floriana and Ġnien l-Għannejja Żwieten in Żejtun, both set to host an exciting programme designed to engage audiences of all ages.

Festival-goers can look forward to performances by some of Malta’s most respected għannejja, alongside emerging artists who are helping to shape the future of the tradition. The programme will feature everything from classic għana performances to the much-loved spontaneous ‘Għana Spirtu Pront’; where singers exchange improvised verses in a lively musical dialogue.
Beyond the music, Festgħana will offer a wider cultural experience with community activities, artisan demonstrations, traditional food experiences and interactive workshops aimed at introducing new audiences to this unique art form.

A key highlight of the festival is the Għannejja Ġodda initiative, which shines a spotlight on the next generation of performers, helping to ensure that the tradition continues to thrive and evolve.
This year’s festival will also welcome international folk performers, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and drawing connections between Malta’s own traditions and similar folk expressions from around the world.

Through Festgħana, Festivals Malta continues its mission of preserving and reimagining Maltese cultural heritage for contemporary audiences, ensuring that traditions like għana remain relevant for future generations.
